Care and Use of Wooden Objects
All of my turnings are one of a kind and are finished with a hard wax finish. My recommended finish for bowls to be used for everyday food use would be a mineral finish. I then apply a mixture of mineral oil and bees wax over the oil base and buff the piece to a soft sheen.
For occasional food use I apply a tongue oil base finish. This slightly darkens and highlights the grain of the wood. For those pieces that I want to keep light and natural I apply a coat of Tripoli wax , then buff with a white diamond buffing compound and polish with carnauba wax buffed to a high finish.
Salad bowls will need an occasional coat of mineral oil or, if desired, can be left to form their own patina over the years. Waxed bowls may need buffing or an occasional light coat of a food safe wax. After use wash lightly and dry with a soft cloth.
Varnish is only used on my segmented turnings. All pieces turned for use with food are food safe.
